What is Active Release Techniques (ART)?

active release techniques - ART - chiropractor torontoART © is a manual treatment technique used by specially trained practitioners to help mobilize and release all of the soft tissues in the body. It is a unique system of movements combined with therapist pressure that is applied in a specific manner in order to provide a therapeutic response in the body. This technique allows ART © trained manual therapists to treat problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves that can be the source of pain and dysfunction in the body. Muscle pulls, tears, chronic tightness can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis and nerves can become entrapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength and increase pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness. This treatment strategy can be used to improve pain, range of motion and function ultimately helping to improve functional strength and performance.

Who Can Benefit from ART ©?

Most people with pain or stiffness respond well to ART ©. This treatment system works best when combined with other modalities including stretching, strengthening, acupuncture and other manual therapies. Conditions that are treated successfully with ART © include:

  • Back and Neck Pain
  • Muscle pulls strains
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Shin Splints
  • Ankle sprains
  • Rib Pain
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Rotator Cuff Injury
  • Nerve Entrapments eg: Sciatica
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Knee Problems
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Golfers Elbow
  • Patellofemoral Pain

What is an ART © treatment like?

Your therapist will start by conducting a full assessment of your specific complaint. While the assessment is occurring, they will pay close attention to areas where there may be scar tissue build up, muscle banding, trigger points or adhesions in the soft tissues. Once the assessment is complete the therapist will start releasing the tight areas that are contributing to your specific complaint using the ART © system of treatment. They will apply pressure along the soft tissue and then guide you to move your body part in a very specific way in order to tension the tissue even further. Your therapist may work on multiple areas in a single treatment session. You may feel some discomfort while the treatment is being performed but once the treatment is complete, you should feel significant relief and more range of motion. Depending on your condition, your practitioner may choose to combine ART © treatment with other forms of successful treatment approaches including joint mobilization, acupuncture, stretching and strengthening exercise.

Call us today to book your appointment with one of our highly qualified ART © practitioners and get on the road to recovery today.
