Naturopathic Benefits of Sinus Rinsing
Our Naturopath, Dr. Morgan Winton, is very passionate about sinus rinsing since she has had such great success in her practice with it. It can be such a simple solution for so many conditions such as allergies, upper respiratory tract infections, chronic sinusitis, post nasal drip, and more! It is also safe during pregnancy, which is great since many pregnant women have excess mucous production.
The theory behind it is simple, you flush a saline solution through your sinuses thereby flushing out excess mucous, allergens, and bacteria. This means that your sinuses stay clear and congestion gets washed out. The Netti pot is the original sinus rinse device and although it works just fine, Dr. Winton prefers the simplicity of the NeilMed Sinus Rinse squeeze bottle as it is much easier to use. NeilMed also makes little packets to turn regular water into a saline solution, but you can do the same thing by using 1/4 teaspoon of salt with a 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in the sinus rinse bottle. Several patients have tried the nasal mist type products that you squirt up your nose and have found it to be effective, however Dr. Morgan still recommends the full sinus rinse as it is much more reliable.
If you have any questions or want to tackle your allergies or sinus issues, please don’t hesitate to make an appointment with our naturopath so that she can put together the right protocol for you.
