GLA:D is an evidence based, scientifically proven, successful management plan for individuals with hip or knee osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis affects millions of Canadians and prevents impacted individuals from staying active and participating in the activities they love. The GLA:D program was created to change the lives of those impacted by osteoarthritis by bringing research based clinical guidelines into standard clinical practice. The program helps to delay or prevent the need for hip or knee replacement surgery and allows participants to maintain an active lifestyle. The GLA:D program consists of education sessions in combination with a guided neuromuscular exercise program to improve pain and function in participants. The results are phenomenal and we are excited to offer this program at our clinics in downtown Toronto!
GLA:DTM is an 8 week education and neuromuscular exercise program for those individuals with stiff and/or painful knees or hips as a result of osteoarthritis. The GLA:D program is run by certified practitioners who offer the program both in-person or virtually. During the 8 weeks, participants will take part in 2 education sessions as well as biweekly group exercise sessions. Research has shown that the GLA:D program decreases pain, reduces the use of pain medications, reduces sick leave, delays or prevents surgery and ultimately results in the participants of the program being more active.
Before you can enroll in the program, our GLA:D certified practitioners will conduct an assessment to determine if you are a good fit for the program. During the assessment, your practitioner will complete a thorough evaluation of your condition, by gathering a detailed history and performing some tests at the impacted joints. They will also evaluate your strength, function and look at other outcomes to evaluate your baseline status. Anyone with pain or stiffness due to osteoarthritis is an ideal candidate, this includes mild to severe forms of the disease. X-rays or doctors’ referrals are not required to qualify for the program. If you are not deemed a good candidate for the program, your practitioner, will suggest alternative treatment options that are better suited for your specific needs. If you are a suitable candidate, you will be given the opportunity to enroll into the program.
During each 60-minute education session, you will learn important information that will empower you to live healthy, active and fun-filled lives with your osteoarthritis. You will learn about osteoarthritis and associated risk factors. You will understand the disease so you can learn to live with it successfully. We believe the more you know, the more that you can do, and in this case, knowledge is truly power!

You will learn how to control your movements and gain and improved understand of joint alignment and posture. Through these exercises, you will develop increased strength, muscle control, agility, balance and power. What’s even more, is that you will learn how to apply these exercises to everyday activities so that you move through life in a way that is beneficial to your condition. These exercise sessions will be invaluable and if you can take what you learn and develop a regular routine, the outcomes will be endless.
