Rheumatoid Arthritis: Understanding the Condition and How Physiotherapy Can Help

Learn what rheumatoid arthritis is, what causes it, and how treatment with our clinical team at Rebalance Sports Medicine can help relieve pain, stiffness, and inflammation so you can move and feel better every day.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes your immune system to attack the lining of your joints (called the synovium). This leads to pain, stiffness, swelling, and inflammation, which can make movement difficult and uncomfortable.

Over time, untreated RA can cause joint deformities and reduced mobility. It can also affect other parts of your body such as your eyes, skin, lungs, heart, and blood vessels.

Did you know? Women are about three times more likely than men to develop rheumatoid arthritis, most often between the ages of 30 and 60.

What Causes Rheumatoid Arthritis?

The exact cause of RA isn’t completely understood, but it’s believed to be due to a combination of genetic factors and environmental triggers. Essentially, your immune system starts attacking healthy joint tissue, causing inflammation and pain.

Certain factors, such as family history, smoking, or past infections, may increase your risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.

Common Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis:

Common signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis include:

  • Joint pain, tenderness, and swelling
  • Warmth around the joints
  • Morning stiffness lasting longer than 30 minutes
  • Involvement of multiple joints (often on both sides of the body)
  • Fatigue, weakness, or a general feeling of being unwell

If these symptoms sound familiar, it’s important to see your healthcare provider early. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent long-term joint damage.

How Physiotherapy Helps Manage Rheumatoid Arthritis

At Rebalance Sports Medicine in downtown Toronto, our physiotherapists play an essential role in managing rheumatoid arthritis. We focus on helping you move better, reduce pain, improve strength, and maintain your independence in daily life.

Here’s how physiotherapy can make a difference:

1. Pain and Stiffness Relief
Gentle stretching and range-of-motion exercises help relieve stiffness, improve flexibility, and prevent long-term joint contractures.
2. Strength and Stability Training
Targeted strengthening exercises support your joints, enhance muscle endurance, and improve overall mobility.
3. Education and Lifestyle Guidance
Your physiotherapist will teach you about joint protection, the use of braces or adaptive tools, energy conservation, and flare-up prevention, all tailored to your lifestyle.
4. Therapeutic Modalities
Treatments such as heat, cold therapy, hydrotherapy, and electrical stimulation may help relieve pain and swelling.
5. Balance and Fall Prevention
Customized balance and coordination exercises can help reduce your risk of falls and make movement safer and more confident.
6. Gait and Mobility Training
If needed, we can recommend and teach you how to use mobility aids such as canes or walkers for greater comfort and independence.

Tip: Physiotherapy works best when combined with your medical treatment plan. Together, they help reduce inflammation, improve joint strength, and slow down disease progression.

Other Supportive Therapies at Rebalance Sports Medicine

Alongside physiotherapy, you may also benefit from our multidisciplinary team approach to managing rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. At Rebalance, we also offer:

  • Chiropractic Care: Gentle joint mobilizations (for non-inflamed joints), posture correction, and ergonomic advice.
  • Massage Therapy: Helps release muscle tension, improve circulation, and support joint mobility.
  • Acupuncture: Can help reduce pain perception and promote relaxation during flare-ups.

Each treatment plan is customized to your needs and stage of RA to ensure safe, effective care.

What to Avoid During a Flare-Up

When your joints are hot, swollen, or painful, rest and gentle movement are key. Avoid the following during flare-ups:

  1. Applying heat to inflamed joints
  2. High-impact or heavy strengthening exercises
  3. Repetitive heavy lifting or jumping
  4. Delaying medical care. Early treatment helps prevent long-term damage

Our team can help you modify your activities and find ways to stay active safely during these times.

Recovery and Long-Term Management

While there’s no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, it can be effectively managed. With early intervention and the right treatment, many people achieve remission or low disease activity.

At Rebalance Sports Medicine, we often see patients notice improvements in pain, strength, and movement within 6-12 weeks of starting a personalized physiotherapy program.

Long-term management combines exercise, medication, and lifestyle habits to keep flare-ups under control and maintain joint health.

Safe Home Exercises for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Here are a few gentle exercises you can do at home. Always check with your physiotherapist before starting any new routine.
1. Active Range of Motion
Move each affected joint through its comfortable, pain-free range.
Reps: 10 times, 1–3 times daily
Helps maintain flexibility and reduce stiffness.

2. Ankle Exercises
Promotes circulation and prevents stiffness.
Ankle Circles: Rotate each ankle clockwise and counterclockwise (10 reps each direction).
Ankle Alphabet: “Draw” the alphabet with your big toe.
Ankle Pumps: Point and flex your toes (10 reps, twice daily).

3. Sit-to-Stand
When inflammation is controlled, practice standing up from a sturdy chair.
Reps: 2–3 sets of 8–10 reps.
Builds strength and supports daily activities.

4. Gentle Aerobic Activity
Choose low-impact activities like walking, swimming, or cycling for 20–30 minutes, 5 days a week. These help boost energy, mood, and cardiovascular health while protecting your joints.

Living with RA doesn’t mean living with constant pain. With the right care, education, and support, you can continue doing the things you love while protecting your joints.
