Stretching on your own not effective enough? Experience enhanced flexibility, improved mobility, and better recovery after activity with Stretch Rx.

As our premiere approach to stretch therapy, these personalized one-on-one treatment sessions with certified therapists are designed to help you release deep muscular tension. Stretch Rx is offered at our 155 University clinic location on the PATH.

Stretch Rx: Therapist guided stretching

Stretch Rx is our signature assisted stretching service, a specialized form of one-on-one stretch therapy. During each session, you relax completely while a certified Physiotherapy Assistant (PTA) guides your body through a precise series of stretches. This passive approach allows your muscles to fully release deep-seated tension, enabling a more profound and effective stretch than you could achieve on your own, leading to a significant improvement in your range of motion.

The core benefits of assisted stretching

Integrating Stretch Rx into your wellness routine provides a host of tangible benefits designed to improve how you move and feel every day by:

  • Enhancing flexibility and pain reduction
  • Accelerating muscle recovery
  • Improving athletic performance
  • Helping provide relief from chronic stiffness

Consider Stretch Rx for the following conditions:

Stretch Rx is designed to help a wide variety of individuals. While almost anyone can benefit from improved mobility, it can be particularly effective for:

  • Athletes looking to optimize performance and accelerate muscle recovery
  • Office professionals who need to counteract the stiffness and poor posture that arises with prolonged sitting
  • Active adults who want to maintain their range of motion
  • Anyone experiencing chronic tightness that interferes with their quality of life

Many common aches and pains are symptoms of underlying muscular tightness. By targeting the root cause, Stretch Rx can help:

  • Support desk workers by relieving muscle tension and stiffness caused by long hours of sitting.
  • Helps athletes recover from injury and reduce the risk of common injuries such as IT band syndrome, shin splints, and plantar fasciitis
  • Relieve joint stiffness and nerve pain such as pinched nerves (sciatica) and facet joint dysfunction so movement feels easier and less painful
  • Support people living with ongoing pain by addressing muscle imbalances and reducing every day discomfort

What can I expect with Stretch Rx?

Getting started with Stretch Rx is a simple and personalized process.

Your initial consultation

New patients begin with an initial assessment with a registered physiotherapist. We will evaluate your mobility, flexibility, discuss your goals, and create your customized stretch plan.

Your Stretch Rx session

For your appointment, you will remain fully clothed as you relax on a treatment table while your certified therapist gently guides your body through a series of targeted stretches.

Ongoing support

Your progress is monitored and your plan evolves with your needs. Your physiotherapist and stretch therapist will provide personalized at-home stretches, complete with video guides and clear instructions, to help you maintain flexibility and feel great.

For general maintenance and proactive flexibility, a session once or twice a month can be effective. For more specific goals like recovering from intense athletic training or addressing chronic stiffness from sitting all day, more frequent sessions can help provide relief. Your therapist will work with you to create a treatment plan that best meets your needs.

Is stretch therapy different from a massage?

Stretch Rx vs massage therapy

While both massage and assisted stretching like Stretch Rx are excellent to help relieve tension, they work differently. Massage therapy focuses on kneading and manipulating muscle tissue to help break up knots. In contrast, Stretch Rx focuses on lengthening the entire muscle-tendon unit to improve overall flexibility and range of motion. The intended result of a Stretch Rx session is a feeling of being looser and more relaxed.
