5 Common Causes of Headaches (and How Treatment Can Help)

Headaches are extremely common. In fact, headache disorders affect approximately 40% of the global population and are among the top three neurological conditions across most age groups, beginning around age five and continuing well into older adulthood.

Although headache frequency and triggers can vary, they affect people worldwide regardless of race, lifestyle, or income level. (1)

Headaches can range from mild to severe and may occur occasionally or frequently. Some people experience headaches only once or twice per year, while others develop chronic headaches that can be present for over 50% of the time.

Because headaches can interfere with work, exercise, social activities, and mental health, identifying the underlying cause is an important first step toward effective treatment.

Below are five common causes of headaches that healthcare professionals frequently see in clinical practice.

1. Stress and Tension

Stress is one of the most common triggers for headaches (and many other conditions). When we experience stress, the muscles in the neck, shoulders, and scalp can tighten and contract, which may lead to tension headaches.

Typical symptoms include:

  • A dull, steady ache
  • Pressure around the forehead or temples
  • Pain that often affects both sides of the head
  • Discomfort starting at the base of the skull

Unlike migraines, tension headaches typically do not cause nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light. Managing stress and addressing muscle tension through manual therapy, exercise, and relaxation strategies can help reduce these headaches.

2. Poor Posture

Modern work environments, especially desk-based jobs common in Toronto’s Financial District, often involve long hours sitting at a computer. Over time, poor posture can contribute to what is often referred to as Upper Crossed Syndrome, a pattern of muscle imbalance and joint stiffness in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. This can lead to cervicogenic headaches, which originate from structures in the neck.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Headache on one side of the head
  • Reduced neck mobility
  • Pain that begins in the neck and travels toward the head
  • Headaches that worsen with certain neck movements

Improving posture and treating the underlying neck dysfunction can significantly reduce these types of headaches.

3. Jaw Dysfunction (TMJ Disorders)

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull and plays an important role in speaking, chewing, and facial movement. When the jaw muscles become overactive or tight, it can lead to jaw dysfunction and headaches.

Common causes include:

  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Jaw clenching
  • Muscle tightness around the jaw and temples

Because many of the jaw muscles attach near the sides of the head, tension in these areas can easily contribute to headaches. Tight jaw muscles may also increase tension in the neck muscles, further contributing to head pain.

Here at Rebalance, we offer specialty massage treatment for TMJ disorders, read more about how massage can help here. Or click here to book your TMJ massage assessment and treatment today.

4. Diet and Food Sensitivities

Certain foods and dietary factors can trigger headaches in some individuals. These are often migraine-type headaches, which may present as throbbing pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and/or sound.

If you suspect that sensitivity to certain foods or additives is causing your headaches, it is recommended to do food sensitivity testing to determine what your body may be reacting to. Our naturopathic doctors at Rebalance Sports Medicine can get you started by running these tests and then helping guide the necessary dietary changes to alleviate your symptoms.

Low blood sugar from missing meals can also cause headaches, often presenting a tight or squeezing sensation.

5. Dehydration

Dehydration is another frequent cause of headaches. Although the brain itself does not contain pain receptors, the protective tissues surrounding the brain (the meninges) do. When dehydration occurs, fluid shifts can place tension on these tissues, potentially triggering headache pain.

Symptoms of dehydration headaches may improve after:

  • Drinking fluids
  • Resting or lying down
  • Restoring proper hydration levels

Maintaining adequate daily water intake is an important step in preventing these headaches.

At Rebalance Sports Medicine in Downtown Toronto, our multidisciplinary healthcare team can help assess and treat headaches.

Our team includes:

  • Chiropractors
  • Physiotherapists
  • Registered massage therapists
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners
  • Osteopaths
  • Naturopathic doctors

A thorough evaluation typically includes:

  • A detailed health history
  • Assessment of neck, jaw, and spine function
  • Evaluation of muscles, joints, and nerves

This helps identify underlying causes such as stress-related muscle tension, poor posture, neck dysfunction, or jaw issues. If lifestyle factors like diet or hydration may be contributing, our naturopaths can help, or appropriate referrals or recommendations can be made to other healthcare specialists.

When Should You Seek Help for Headaches?

Because headaches are so common, many people try to manage them on their own. However, frequent or persistent headaches should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

Proper diagnosis and treatment can help:

  • Reduce headache frequency
  • Decrease pain intensity
  • Improve daily function and quality of life
  • Prevent headaches from becoming chronic

If headaches are interfering with your work, exercise routine, or daily life, a professional assessment may help identify the cause and guide effective treatment. Contact us to book your appointment today.
