In this video, Registered Massage Therapist and Joga Coach Melissa Doldron demonstrates some basic and advanced breathing exercises. Breathing exercises can be used to calm the mind and body.
The breath is vital to all bodily functions and one of the major muscles required for breathing is the diaphragm which plays a pivotal role with inner core activation.
As such, correct breathing is fundamental to all movements because without appropriate use of the diaphragm, the body will not have a stable base to move about from.
Breathing can become dysfunctional with stress, anxiety, poor postures, non-optimal loading of the spine and repetitive tasks that promote imbalances through the core. Practicing breathing exercises regularly and making a more conscious effort to improve breathing with everyday tasks can be all that is required to restore optimal breathing patterns.
Although these exercises are simple and generally safe for most, we always recommend speaking with a trusted heath professional to ensure that they are right for you and that you are doing them correctly.
If you would like to learn more, we recommend booking an appointment with our experienced physiotherapists who can help you develop a program to improve your breathing and improve your core strength.
They can help develop an individualized program for you based on your specific needs and areas of weakness. They will give you cues and strategies so that you will know when you are doing the exercises correctly and will educate you on what to look out for so that you do not cheat or compensate.
