Chia Seeds
Our naturopathic doctor, Dr. Morgan Winton, sees many benefits of incorporating chia seeds into your diet. Chia seeds are packed full of fibre and omega 3 fatty acids. Dr. Winton is generally not a fan of plant sourced omega 3s so when she found them in chia seeds they were just an added bonus. Chia seeds have been shown to lower blood pressure in diabetics and have also been shown to lower cholesterol. Chia seeds are also a minor source of calcium, which most of us need a little extra of.
A great tip from Dr. Winton is to put whole chia seeds in smoothies. She also loves this recipe for chia “pudding” that she got from The Plan cookbook. It is more like tapioca than a regular pudding.
Blueberry Pear Chia Pudding
1 cup blueberries
1 pear diced
1.25 cups water
Boil for 10 minutes
Remove from heat and add 1/2 cup chia seeds.
Mix thoroughly and let sit for minimum 4 hours or overnight – enjoy!
Its very important to have variety in your diet, and hopefully this inspires you to try something new. If you have any questions about improving your diet, please contact us to book an appointment with our naturopathic doctor.
