Naturopathic Recommendations for Detoxing
There are many people that visit our naturopath who are interested in starting a “detox”. Here are some simple beliefs about detoxing.
- Ideally, detoxing should be done with the change of season, i.e. spring & fall.
- You have to be having regular bowel movements before you start detoxing or your body will just reabsorb all that you’re trying to eliminate.
- You have to be feeling strong to detox. If you’re already feeling depleted, detoxing can make you feel even worse.
- You shouldn’t detox if you’re pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
It’s nice to be able to do a detox that’s specific to YOU! It can be as simple as doing the Master Cleanse, or it can involve more specific supplements and dietary changes designed to help with any underlying conditions that you may have. One of the things that I love about doing a detox is that it forces me to explore new foods and new recipes to incorporate the dietary changes. I always end up with a new healthy favorite food that I keep eating even once the detox is over. A special trip to Whole Foods often makes my detox experience easier and more tasty!
